Fourth U.S. Naturopathic College Set to Open This Fall in Connecticut
******************************************************

by Peter Barry Chowka

The University of Bridgeport (UB) in Connecticut, a private, 70 year old
non-sectarian university with a total enrollment of 2,400 students, has
been licensed by the state of Connecticut's Department of Higher Education
to establish a College of Naturopathic Medicine. The new naturopathic
college, which will open in the fall of 1997 and be housed on UB's urban
campus, is the first post-graduate school of naturopathic medicine on the
U.S. East coast. It joins Bastyr University in Seattle, the National
College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) in Portland, OR, and Southwest
College of Health Sciences in Scottsdale, AZ in granting ND (Doctor of
Naturopathic Medicine) degrees.

Naturopathic physicians, in the vanguard of the field of complementary
alternative medicine, are primary health care providers who use nontoxic
therapies such as clinical nutrition, homeopathy, botanical medicine,
hydrotherapy, physical medicine, and counseling. Accredited educational
institutions are particularly important to the naturopathic medical
community's infrastructure, which also includes professional licensing by
a growing number of states, national standards of practice and care, peer
review, and an ongoing commitment to state-of-the-art scientific research.

Bastyr and NCNM are fully accredited, Southwest is a candidate for
accreditation, and it is anticipated that the UB College of Naturopathic
Medicine will apply as soon as possible after opening for full
accreditation.

The University of Bridgeport already has a commitment to educating
students in alternative health care. UB is the only four-year university
in the U.S. with a College of Chiropractic, which opened in 1992.
According to UB President Richard L. Rubenstein, "We think the
Naturopathic College is a monumental step for the University of
Bridgeport. It's another first for the University and a logical outgrowth
of our commitment to alternative health care and medicine and it goes hand
in hand with our Chiropractic College."

Recently, demand on the part of prospective naturopathic medical students
has outstripped the capacity of the three U.S. naturopathic colleges.
James Sensenig, ND, interim dean of the UB College of Naturopathic
Medicine, noted an overwhelming early response to the announcement of the
new East coast school, which, he said, has already drawn inquiries from
hundreds of interested students.

"It is an exciting time for the University," Sensenig said. "UB will be
the first university to incorporate a naturopathic college. It will fill a
great need for alternative health care education in the state and
throughout the East."

Sensenig, a clinician, educator, and a founder of the American Association
of Naturopathic Physicians and the association's first president, expects
the new naturopathic college to begin with a class of 20 students in the
fall and add 20 more students in the spring 1998 semester. "We're excited
about getting started and plan a steady, controlled growth," he said. "We
will offer an outstanding academic curriculum to educate naturopathic
doctors." Naturopathic education is stringent and demanding, with a core
scientific curriculum of courses including microbiology, anatomy,
physiology, and pathology. In addition, naturopathic students at UB will
receive specialized training in clinical nutrition, homeopathy, botanical
medicine, physical medicine, Oriental medicine, lifestyle counseling, and
stress management.
